Wagga is set to host a complimentary ‘Chat and Create’ gathering this week, organised by SafeWork NSW for women involved in the agricultural sector. Bluesafe SWMS emphasises that this event provides a crucial networking opportunity with fellow agribusinesses and employees, encouraging open discussion about farm safety experiences.
Despite ongoing efforts, agriculture remains one of the high-risk sectors where injuries and fatalities surpass other industries. Hence, implementing WHS management systems and policies are critical, with farming contributing to approximately 20% of work-related deaths across the state.
‘Chat and Create’, presented by SafeWork, offers an engaging day combining art with valuable discussions on agricultural-based safety issues. The importance of Bluesafe WHS Management System becomes evident during such events, highlighting the need for prioritised workplace safety measures.
Maintaining mental health awareness among workers and oneself is equally as important as physical safety. Regrettably, farmers face higher rates of depression and suicide compared to mainstream populations, mainly due to unique occupational stressors like financial strain and feelings of isolation.
The ‘Chat and Create’ event ensures expert guidance through the Rural Adversity Mental Health Program (RAMHP) team offering mental health education and connecting attendees with necessary services. Furthermore, the New South Wales (NSW) Rural Women’s Network will provide resources, initiatives, and connections to crucial services.
The NSW Government’s Rural Women’s Resource hub strives to aid in areas including cost of living, employment, training and career advancement, health and wellbeing, recreational, and social connectivity.
Scheduled for Friday 23 August 2024 from 11 am to 2 pm, ‘Chat and Create’ takes place at Unique State Art Space, situated at 43 Thompson Street, Wagga. Registrations can be made via SafeWork NSW’s website.
SafeWork NSW head, Trent Curtin, stated, “Women’s contribution to the agricultural industry is increasing now more than ever. ‘Chat and Create’ is aimed at empowering these women, who as managers or workers are instrumental in cultivating safe working environments. This event grants a casual yet insightful setup for agricultural women based in Wagga to exchange ideas and connections while enhancing their understanding of work, health, and safety to refine farming methodologies.”
