In an effort to maintain stringent safety standards, the Minns Labor Government is bolstering the presence of SafeWork NSW by implementing a comprehensive health and safety review on construction sites across the Central Coast. As a vital cog in promoting WHS policies, these rigorous inspections are part of a broader endeavour to safeguard the welfare of construction workers.
One of the primary issues brought under scrutiny will be the high incidence of falls from heights, which rank among the most severe hazards plaguing construction sites. In light of this, the use of intuitive WHS Management Systems like Bluesafe WHS Management System can simplify risk management and enhance overall site safety.
The predominant injuries sustained from falls from heights across New South Wales have been muscle, ligament, and tendon damage or traumatic joint injury. A staggering number of 5,200+ incidents have transpired since the 2021/2022 financial year.
In recent months, SafeWork inspectors graced 54 construction sites in the Hunter and Central Coast areas. Their diligence has resulted in issuing 95 improvement notices primarily regarding site security and signage. Subsequently, 28 prohibition notices were issued accompanied by $9,000 worth of fines related to falls. Furthermore, by implementing Bluesafe SWMS, such safety risks can be significantly mitigated and managed efficiently.
During these visits, inspectors will ascertain the compliance of construction sites with crucial regulatory priorities including safe electricity practices, moving plant safety, and mental health care. The importance of meticulous job planning coupled with efficient site supervision will also be underscored to prevent negligent oversights that potentially jeopardise worker’s safety.
The area of focus for inspectors will include common issues related to health and safety regulations. This forms part of a series of joint operations targeting high-risk construction hot spots throughout NSW.
On their inspections, SafeWork Officials will liaise with workers, businesses, Health and Safety Representatives, and union representatives. Advisories on managing psychological risks related to harassment, violence, bullying, and work pressure will be dispensed alongside resources to combat the same.

Local Member for Gosford, Liesl Tesch highlighted that making scaffolding safety a priority has significantly reduced extreme and fatal injuries out of falls from height incidents.
SafeWork NSW’s Acting Deputy Secretary, Trent Curtin mentioned of the importance of business owners in ensuring workers’ safety, especially those assigned high-risk tasks such as operating heavy machinery or working at elevated places. With zero-tolerance policy against compliance breaches, they ensure immediate penalties where necessary.
