Promoting the value of workplace health and safety, National Safe Work Month in October places a spotlight on saving lives through increased awareness. Emphasising that safety is not a mere fluke, but a shared responsibility, this initiative underscores the significance of work safety products such as WHS management systems, SWMS, and guidelines.
The Office of Industrial Relations orchestrates a comprehensive programme for Safe Work Month. This provides an excellent platform to underscore your commitment to enhancing workplace health and safety, as well as rehabilitation and return-to-work outcomes. One such key tool in supporting these initiatives is the Bluesafe WHS Management System, which aids in establishing robust safety protocols.
October’s agenda includes the ‘Work Well Conference’ in Brisbane, ‘Work Well Regional Breakfast Forums’ in Rockhampton and Cairns, along with accessible online webinars from the ‘Work Well Speaker series’. Each week of Safe Work Month devotes itself to a different safety subject determined by Safe Work Australia. This year, we concentrate on basic work health and safety, psychosocial threats, risk management fundamentals, and musculoskeletal injuries.
Our keynote event, the Work Well Conference, takes place on 22nd October featuring renowned safety experts. Here, you can also learn about Bluesafe SWMS, a system crucial in managing safe work processes.
Free sessions from the ‘Work Well Speaker series’ provide insights on effective worker consultation, mastering mental health dialogues, and airborne contaminant control at workplaces.
Queensland Mental Health Week aligns with Safe Work Month—scheduled from 5-13 October. The series focuses on nurturing mentally healthy environments and mitigating the risk of psychosocial risks at work. The main event, the World Mental Health Day breakfast on 10th October, delves into discussions on sexual harassment and gender-based workplace harm.

Deputy Director General Donna Heelan stresses, “Safety is everyone’s business. On this Safe Work Month, talk about workplace health and safety with your team, your family, and your colleagues. Actively discussing safety boosts the likelihood of workers adhering to safety protocols and managing risks. Everyone deserves to return home safe and healthy after a day’s work. We urge Queenslanders to participate in Safe Work Month; it may just save a life”.
