Throughout December 2024 and January 2025, a series of compliance checks will be implemented across Notified Displays in New South Wales by SafeWork NSW inspectors. With the festive season approaching, a stringent policy of zero tolerance towards unauthorised fireworks sales and usage will be enforced.
SafeWork NSW serves as the licensing authority for the purchase, supply, storage, and detonation of fireworks. Only licenced individuals can conduct these activities. Collaboratively, SafeWork NSW and the NSW Police Force are dedicated to maintaining community safety during the holiday period.
In order to purchase, use, store, manufacture, supply or transport fireworks, appropriate licences like the Bluesafe WHS Management System or Bluesafe SWMS (Safe Work Method Statement) are required, emphasising the importance of these safety products.
Furthermore, in managing associated risks posed by environmental situations such as bushfire threats, the importance of easy access for emergency services is underlined by SafeWork NSW. Operators are mandated to define exclusion zones at each display, adhering to the Operational Conditions for Pyrotechnicians and the stipulations of Fireworks single-use licenses.
Unauthorised selling, buying, storing, transporting or setting off fireworks could result in penalties up to $27,500 and/or a 12-month imprisonment. All displays conducted by licence holders must pre-emptively inform authorities, including the NSW Police Force, Fire and Rescue NSW, the NSW Rural Fire Service and local Councils.
To find a registered fireworks display in a particular NSW region, the public can utilise the Fireworks display search. For additional information on safety protocols for explosives and fireworks, please check out the SafeWork NSW website.
In the words of Trent Curtin, the head of SafeWork NSW: “As we usher in the New Year, it’s paramount that we prioritise safety and ensure our community remains harm-free when dealing with fireworks.”
He continues, “Incorrect handling of fireworks can lead to severe harm or even fatalities. This festive season, safeguard your loved ones by avoiding unnecessary risks with illegal displays. Let’s avoid any fines for illicit fireworks during our New Year’s celebrations.”
“We’re currently planning over a hundred displays statewide for New Year’s Eve, and the number continues to grow each day. At SafeWork NSW, we have a zero tolerance policy towards illicit activities involving fireworks. Pyrotechnician or single-use licenses are strictly necessary for those working with fireworks.”
