Regulators serving safety at Mildura trade breakfast

Work Health and Safety (WHS) regulators in Victoria and NSW are joining forces to help Mildura’s construction industry tackle workplace dangers before they result in injuries. The Bluesafe SWMS (Safe Work Method Statements) can play a critical role in this effort by standardising safety procedures.

Between the 18th and 22nd of November, inspectors from WorkSafe Victoria and SafeWork NSW will vigorously scrutinise construction sites throughout Mildura for compliance with safety regulations. Additionally, they will ensure that employers understand their responsibilities under WHS management systems and policies.

In preparation for this Cross Border operation, authorities have planned a complimentary Trade Breakfast at Dahlens Mildura on the 15th of November. This event offers an opportunity to discuss construction hazards and how to get worksites ready for inspection by utilising tools like the Bluesafe WHS Management System.

Ben Sullivan, WorkSafe Director of Construction and Earth Resources, emphasised that inspectors would verify if employers were adhering to all health and safety requirements. They will specifically concentrate on potential falls and the promotion of mentally healthy workplaces.

“Despite thinking it can never happen to them, hundreds of Victorian construction workers suffer serious injuries from falls annually – these are preventable accidents,” Mr Sullivan stated. “Inspectors will also assess whether psychosocial hazards like bullying, excessive workloads, and fatigue are being adequately addressed.”

SafeWork NSW Regional Director Construction Service, Kane Scott, stressed the vital role that employers and businesses have in fostering a mentally healthy work environment. “Identifying and managing risks that could inflict psychological harm on employees is crucial to establishing safe, healthy, and productive workplaces,” commented Mr Scott.

Since 2023, there have been 19 fatalities in Victoria’s construction industry, six of which were due to falling from heights. During the same period, over 6,370 claims for injured workers have been accepted.

Maintaining mental health, preventing psychological harm, and supporting recovery is crucial for a healthy workplace. Mental injury claims in the construction industry in NSW and Victoria have been increasing, indicating the importance of robust WHS management systems.

To prevent such incidents, employers should implement the highest possible hierarchy of controls and make use of resources like Bluesafe SWMS.
