Put tradies health first this August

In the month of August, recognised as Tradie Health Month, SafeWork NSW emphasises the importance for tradespeople to revisit and voice any concerns related to their work health and safety (WHS). This provides an opportunity for them to incorporate essential work safety products like WHS management systems, Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS), and policies to ensure a healthy and lengthy career.

It is crucial that young tradies get adequate training, direction and supervision. According to statistics from SafeWork NSW, nearly 20 percent of reported incidents between 2017-2021 were attributed to injuries sustained by young workers. For instance, a 19-year-old cabinetry apprentice recently fell approximately three meters in a stair void, resulting in broken ribs.

Within construction enterprises, it is incumbent to establish safe environments where worker protection is prioritised. Young tradespeople should receive pertinent training, guidance and be equipped with the confidence to voice their opinions. The utility of tools such as the Bluesafe SWMS can assist in creating these secure workplace surroundings.

SafeWork’s advice to young workers highlights the importance of caution. If there’s uncertainty, stop and verify—it’s either the safe way, or no way at all. Concerns about unsafe conditions on work sites can be raised anonymously via the Speak Up Save Lives application.

SafeWork have also devised an online Young Worker eToolkit for employees and workers, encapsulating key tips and training materials regarding individual safety rights and responsibilities at work.

Trent Curtin, the Head of SafeWork NSW, warns, “Workplace incidents can lead to life-altering injuries, illness, and even death.” He stresses the need to understand employers’ obligations to the wellbeing and safety of the young workers, stating “They are vulnerable. Often inexperienced, still in physical and mental development, eager to impress and might hesitate to ask questions.”

He concludes with a stark reminder to all employers “Neglecting to guarantee workplace safety is a risk not worth taking.” The appropriate use of systems such as Bluesafe WHS Management System can be instrumental in reducing these risks.
