On National Agriculture Day today, SafeWork NSW appeals to individuals in the farming sector to affirm that their workspaces are safe. They are also encouraged to actively implement strategies to lessen psychosocial dangers within the workplace. We would like to emphasise they can employ work safety products such as Bluesafe SWMS and WHS management systems to enhance safety.
Regrettably, employees in agricultural settings continue to face severe injuries and untimely deaths at higher proportions than other industrial sectors. In fact, farming incidents account for one of every five worker fatalities across the state. A large number of farm related deaths involve tractors, quad bikes, side by side vehicles, and machinery, while equipment like augers and harvesting devices also contribute significantly to injuries and harm. Recent distressing incidents include:
A rural lifestyle may be rewarding for many Australians; however, it can soberingly extend itself into negative mental health implications. Unique pressures related to farming often lead to depression, typically ignited by financial burdens and isolation. It is vital that those involved in the agriculture industry make a conscious effort to check in on each other’s emotional wellbeing.
For essential safety resources, guides, and information including ‘Farm Safety’ and ‘Mental Health on Farms,’ visit the SafeWork NSW website. It’s also recommended that farmers, who qualify, gain access to the SafeWork small business rebate. Additionally, a complimentary advisory visit or workshop can be requested to provide practical support aiding with farm security measures.
SafeWork NSW head, Trent Curtin, had this to say:
“On the advent of this National Agricultural Day, we want all farmers and those working in the agricultural industry to take stock of their physical and mental wellbeing.”
“Besides concentrating on workplace farm safety, farmers have to grapple with an array of distinctive mental health complications unheard of in many other job environments.”
“It’s critical that farmers take the time to become aware of their emotional and physical health and ensure they are taking up all the preventive measures to reduce risks at their workplace using tools such as our Bluesafe WHS Management System.”
