An unfortunate incident in which a 50-year-old man was discovered unresponsive in a low-oxygen cool room designed to preserve apples underlines the vital importance of following work health and safety guidelines. The incident occurred after his vehicle was identified parked nearby, engine still running.
In response to this tragedy, Gvip Storage Pty Ltd now faces two charges as per section 26(1) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. These charges highlight their suspected failure to ensure optimal safety conditions, free from any immediate risks to health within a workplace under their management.
The crucial relevance of effective Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) Management Systems such as the Bluesafe WHS Management System becomes patently clear in such a context. WorkSafe contends that the company fell short in managing potential risks properly by not prohibiting entry into controlled atmosphere cool rooms and by neglecting to install clear warning signs, a crucial component of reliable Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS).
This case underscores the significant role SWMS such as the Bluesafe SWMS can play in maintaining exemplary standards of work safety. Essentially, it aids in pinpointing and consequently reducing serious injury or fatality risks associated with specific activities.
As an important next step towards ensuring occupational safety and health protection, this matter has been scheduled for a filing hearing at Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 20 December.
