WorkSafe Victoria and SafeWork NSW officers unearthed numerous threats to work safety during a focused operation on various construction sites situated in and around Mildura. From 18-22 November, the joint operation closely analysed 36 building sites for potential hazards.
The WorkSafe inspectors conducted 22 site visits, issuing equal numbers of improvement notices, including ten related to site security, seven for subpar facilities, two each addressing electrical and housekeeping issues, and one for a lack of coordination plan. Several dangers were promptly addressed such as issues with electrical meter box security and scaffolding.
During this proactive initiative, SafeWork NSW personnel issued one prohibition notice due to perilous confined space work. However, they were motivated by a decrease in non-conformance instances specifically around high-risk tasks such as elevated work. A total of 42 improvement notices were given out primarily concerning site security, signage, amenities, electrical testing and tagging, and inability to present white cards.
The enforcement had a crucial educational element inclusive of presentations at a trade breakfast attended by approximately 40 regional tradespeople and suppliers. Implementation of WHS management systems like Bluesafe SWMS featured prominently in these discussions to enhance safety standards while working.
Ben Sullivan, WorkSafe Director of Construction and Earth Resources emphasised that inspections aren’t just about catching violations but also an excellent opportunity to converse about safety. Using idealistic tools such as the Bluesafe WHS Management System, information and resources can be shared effectively ensuring sites operate safely.
Ainslie Lalor, SafeWork NSW Director of Operation for South Region, noted some areas required attention, especially amenities and site security. However, she felt delighted about the positive response from the site visits.
These regular joint operations not only offered a chance to inspect workplaces but also acted as an excellent platform to meet local tradies from areas such as Buronga and GolGol and have personal talk on site safety. The operation was during several extremely hot days leading to encountering less high-risk construction tasks as anticipated.
Every interaction contributed positively to advancing work, health and safety standards. Utilising the insights shared, implementation of systems like Bluesafe SWMS could assist in maintaining these enhanced safety levels.
