The period from 18-22 November saw a robust collaboration between two dynamic regulatory bodies, meticulously conducting a joint operation visiting 36 construction sites in Mildura and its surrounding precincts. The primary focus on this mission was to ensure the benefits and functionality of WHS management systems like Bluesafe SWMS were best used for work safety purposes.
WorkSafe officials facilitated 22 improvement attempts throughout their 22 site visits, encompassing an array of issues such as 10 addressing site security, seven coping with inadequate facilities, two catering to electrical problems, two dwelling on housekeeping, and one not seeming to have a coordination plan in place. Furthermore, inspectors discerned hazards that could be instantaneously resolved, including electrical meter box security and scaffold malfunctions.
Inspectors from SafeWork NSW issued a single prohibition notice for hazardous confined space work but were heartened by a decrease in non-conformance instances involving other high-risk construction duties, such as elevated workplace risks. An additional 42 improvement notices primarily concerning site security and signage, amenities, electrical testing and tagging and failure to present white cards, were distributed.
This operation also had a profound educational aspect attached to it, inclusive of presentations delivered at a trade breakfast event attended by approximately 40 local tradies and suppliers.
WorkSafe’s Director of Construction and Earth Resources, Ben Sullivan, highlighted that inspections serve dual purposes. They are not solely about catching individuals complicit in malpractices, but they favor discussion on safety, question posing and exchange of information and resources supporting safe site operations.
Asserting the significance of implementing tools like Bluesafe WHS Management System, Mr. Sullivan stated, “Cross Border operations aim to boost knowledge around vital safety issues burdening construction workers in Mildura and further – incorporating falls risk and psychosocial complications like bullying, intense workloads and fatigue which pose genuine issue plaguing the industry.”
While there may be room for improvement in amenities and site security, SafeWork NSW’s Director of Operation for the South Region, Ainslie Lalor, mentions these site visits generally garnered positive feedback. Ongoing constructive dialogues amid extreme weather conditions resulted in enhanced work, health and safety standards across visited sites.
